Early Education

I was in the Memphis public school system in the early ’70s when “Plan Z” bussing was implemented in the Memphis City schools. My parents had always been strong supporters of the public schools and, although the “white flight” from the Memphis city schools in response to bussing was massive, my parents allowed me to choose to stay in the city schools and be bussed from a predominantly white and more affluent area in east Memphis to a predominantly black and socio-economically depressed school in the Binghamton area. I stayed in the public schools and graduated from East High in 1977. My attending public schools and being bussed to school was one of the most important formative experiences for who I am today.

Righting Wrongs

It would have been easy for me to have grown up privileged, without seeing for myself how different life can be for people because of their race or socio-economic position. My early exposure to the injustice, often occasioned by race or position in life, has contributed to my lifelong desire to right wrongs inflicted on people because of who they are or what they have or don’t have.

Customer First

I believe another important experience in shaping who I am professionally was working as a waiter for about 10 years. The service industry ingrained in me the understanding that the customer is the most important person in any transaction. People who hire me as their lawyer have usually suffered some devastating loss, so we strive to treat everyone with respect and let each client know how important they are. I take my obligation to each client seriously and work hard to meet expectations. My clients are usually working people, so I’m often at the office at 8:00 p.m. calling clients.

My Law Degree

I went to the University of Memphis Law School. I was on law review and the National Labor Law Moot Court team which competed in the national finals at New York University. I graduated number two in my class and received multiple American Jurisprudence awards for making the highest grade in the class. When I graduated, I started practicing at Tatum and Tatum, a small law firm in Henderson. F. Lloyd Tatum had been on the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals and was, for decades before that, considered among the elite lawyers in the region.

Some Cases

I focus on more complex litigation like employment law and medical malpractice. I have filed multi-defendant civil RICO actions that netted millions of dollars for the plaintiffs and recently settled a class action wage and hour case for $9,000,000.00. I have successfully litigated against some of the top national labor law firms. On occasion, I have associated other lawyers and law firms to assist me with complex cases, which has greatly benefited my clients.
